Celestial New Year's Eve

Celestial Show Set for New Year's Eve

Editorial Director
SPACE.com robert Roy Britt
editorial Director
space.com – Tue Dec 30, 11:47 am ETA delightful display of planets and the moon will occur on New Year's Eve for anyone wishing to step outside and look up just after sunset.

Venus, brighter than all other planets and stars, will dangle just below the thin crescent moon in the southwestern sky. It'll be visible -- impossible to miss, in fact -- just as the sun goes down, assuming skies are cloud-free.

Soon thereafter, Mercury and Jupiter will show up hugging the south-southwestern horizon (just above where the sun went down) and extremely close to each other. Jupiter is very bright and easy to spot; Mercury is faint and harder to see, but it'll be apparent by its location just to the left of Jupiter.

Jupiter and Mercury will set less than an hour after the sun, so timing your viewing just after sunset is crucial. You'll also need a location with a clear view of the western horizon, unobstructed by buildings, trees or mountains.

All the planets, along with the moon and sun, traverse an arc across our sky called the ecliptic, which corresponds to the plane in space that they all roughly share. For this reason, you could draw an imaginary line from the general location of Venus and the moon, down through the other two planets, and the line would point to where the sun went down. This line could also initially help you find Jupiter and Mercury.

Weather permitting, you can get a preview of the sky show on Tuesday, Dec. 30. On this evening, the planets will be in nearly the same place they'll be on Dec. 31, but the moon will be midway between Venus and the Mercury-Jupiter pairing.

One last trick:

Venus is so bright you can see it during daylight if you know where to look. Given Venus' proximity to the moon on New Year's Eve, this would be an excellent moment -- just before sunset -- to use the moon to help you find Venus and gain bragging rights for being one of the few people to be able to claim seeing more than one planet during the daytime (Earth being the other one).

Christmas Music

I feel like I'm missing out on Christmas and I dont like it.. and it's not my fault so don't think this is a post about being too busy.

In my life this year there has been a serious lack of Christmas music. I've reached the point in my adult days that I can no longer wait until Thanksgiving to play Christmas music. So normally in October I bust out my favorite CDs and start playing them. However:

1. Work
2. Church
3. Eateries and shopperies

1. Until just 3 days ago we had a Christmas Grinch in our office who would NOT put Christmas music on. It's December. It's freezing outside. We have a Christmas tree up and shining in the office. But NO Christmas music anywhere. It started becoming a battle. The minute the gentleman who handles the music would step out of the office or go to lunch, a lovely co-worker would intervene with Christmas music, but the minute she left we were back to Lifehouse or Coldplay or Eagles.. .all very good music. But I can hear that 340 other days of the year. So what did I do? I brought in my own Christmas CDs and listened to them at my computer with my little earphones. What did that accomplish? A little bit. I got to listen to Christmas music. But the minute I had to move or get up it was back to Dave Matthew's or Colbie Callait or Queen .. all good music, just not fitting the mooooood. I began to resent the guy in control of the music who was really not supposed to be in control of the music. I began to feel really bad for my coworkers. I could listen to my personal Christmas music and even then it was interrupted. But Christmas is not a personal holiday and deserves to not be interrupted! So I had been working on mustering up some courage to confront this person. Couldn't do it. I didn't want the one co-worker who stepped up everytime to be left alone in her endeavors. I had planned on marching over to the gentleman and saying HEY! Give me Christmas or I die! But I know he doesn't work that way. If I challenged him he would become angry. So I waited. Several times I began an email to him, but I had to wait until my heart was more right and to make sure I could really phrase things kindly. Eventually, Tuesday I sent him an email. And mooooooooooostly since then we've had Christmas music. Still heard some Lifehouse yesterday and some Coldplay this morning. But at least I know my coworkers and I are cheered by the fact that we are hearing Christmas music after it was a bit of a battle to get it going and that we get to hear it for the few days before Christmas comes.

2. Our worship pastor at church whom I love and am thankful for and who does great work. Has refused and deprived the church of singing Christmas songs these past 2 Sundays at church. Mom sent him an email to find out what was going on and he stated that most Christmas songs words weren't what he was looking for in quality/standard that he chooses for the church and so he has avoided them. I wasn't sure what to think of that? My first response was that after coming through my divorce and it officially taking place at Christmas time I had worshipped to Christmas music over the past 2 years like never ever ever before. All those lines that you memorize when you are 4 and sing over and over and over every year had never been truly discovered or appreciated by me until just 2 years ago. So to say that Christmas music isn't worshipful - or at the least that there are just a few songs that are - hurt my heart a bit. I understand his desires and his approach and his goals.. just not sure that I really agree with him on this. Especially in light of Christmas music having a general lack this year.

3. When eating out or in retail stores. To me (- though I haven't paid attention at every place -) I am just not hearing Christmas music. I asked today at a local BBQ place why they weren't playing Christmas music and the guy just glazed right over the question basically stating that he had no idea why.

Sidenote: Everything says Happy Holidays. It's amazing that that only took like 3 years to reach full effect.

You know that song Where Are You Christmas? by Faith Hill? I don't really like that song.. but the title is reallly true this year. 'Where are you Christmas? Why can't I find you?' Christmas is disappearing. There are many responsible for that, but we need to speak up so that we literally don't have to one day wake up and wonder where Christmas went.

Can you guys (who don't read my blog anymore) comment with some lines from Christmas songs that you find to be worshipful? Let's see what we can find.

I'll start it off:

O Come, O Come Emmanuel:
O come, thou rod of Jesse, free,
Thine own from satan's tyranny;
From depths of hell thy people save,
And give them vict'ry o'er the grave

Oh, come, Desire of nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind;
Oh, bid our sad divisions cease,
And be yourself our King of Peace.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to you, O Israel!

O come, Thou Wisdom, from on high,
and order all things far and nigh;
to us the path of knowledge show,
and teach us in her ways to go.

And for those of you who get bored with the song.. you should check out Relient K's version of the 12 Days of Christmas. They do the whole song quickly and add a chorus that says the following:
"What's a partridge? And what's a pear tree? Well I don't know so please don't ask me, but I can be those are terrible gifts to get." It's great.

None of these items are on my Christmas list.

Christmas Trees

Up until yesterday I was able to say, "I've decorated 4 Christmas trees this year and notta one of them has been my own." Yesterday my parents got our Christmas tree and it was my job to put the lights on it. Then I had choir practice so couldn't decorate it. By the time I got home last night all the decorations were DONE. So in essence this year.. I can say I decorated 4-1/2 Christmas trees. That's a lot. I'll try and edit this post by adding a pic of our tree later.. when I'm home. Mom, get a picture ready.

Bored Thoughts

I am currently housesitting for a family from church. They have 2 dogs and a cat. The other day. I was in a different room of the house than one of the dogs. And I thought I heard a noise. So I went and found the dog. She was laying on one of the girls beds and had somehow pulled back the fitted sheet and ripped a hole in the mattress pad and was pulling the stuffing out. It was so random! She didn't chew a hole through the sheet and she didnt chew a hole in the mattress(phew!) but I was like...... what possessed you to do this?

I don't know how many know this.. I meant to blog about it a long time ago(but then my niece was born two weeks early and I felt lame posting pictures of a bass instead of her, ya know?). But I got hooked up with an awesome bass and amp and cord for a super great deal (courtesy of Ed at Cassells). I had taken a semester of bass in college and really liked it and always talked about starting it up again and now I am! I've been taking lessons from Todd Johnson and it has been really great! I'm enjoying it and he has been so encouraging!

I'm still really liking my job. I've been there 2.5 months now. The people there are so kind and so funny. It's been a great time. I've had many many spiritual conversations and have fallen in love with all of the operations guys. Probably not professional for me to say I love my co-workers but I do and I pray for them all the time. No word on permanence of the position yet.

Tomorrow night is an acoustic night at church. I'm really looking forward to it. Nate is bringing his upright bass, we will have an extra guitar and Mike is bringing his ukelele that has a hook up. Should be superfun. I've been in the Sunday Night Band for the past 5 or 6 years and it is one of my favorite parts of every week.

This morning at violin lessons. My first student was sitting in her chair getting her violin out of the case. There was a piece of paper on a boombox that is kept in the room and we could hear something rustling against the paper. So I looked over there and the paper was kind of moving. I was like ,"what in the world is that?" she was like "i have no idea." so I told her to back away a bit and i nudged the paper off the CD player and there was a giant cockraoach sitting there. Oh it was so gross. So we calmly walked out of the room and I went over to Ed and told him there was a giant cockroach in my room that I didn't want to take care of. So he did. Except he didn't get it... So I lived the lessons on the lookout for that gross bug.

What is it with giant gross insects/arachnids lately?

Also, I finally went to the Farmer's Market over in Newhall. Sarah DeWolfe and I went on Thursday and ate delicious tacos and fresh horchata. The produce looked amazing but was expensive so I passed on any purchases except for one thing. I bought some Tzatziki.. I can't say no to that stuff. I love it so much.

My friend Jonn gave me a CD to listen to. It's an oldie, but I had never bought it. It is praise from Oasis Church in downtown LA. Titled Bring It On, the cd is pretty amazing. Probably a bit wild for most of the folks who read this blog, but I turn it up and bump bump in my car everyday now. It gets stuck in the head like good music should. Makes me happy and makes me want to sing. And it praises Jesus!

The 4th day of the 7th month of the year 2008

Chelle and I decided to head out and watch fireworks. We got in the car and drove away but the road ended up being closed so I was like, "well I guess we will just watch them from Target's parking lot, IIIFFFF we can find a spot to park." We pulled in, quickly found a parking spot, walked to the cart rail thingy in the middle of the parking lot (that was filled with people hanging out) and waited oooh about 4 minutes when we saw a tiny fireworks show a ways away. Bear in mind that just about every year I am sorely disappointed by the fireworks I see out here. Meanwhile a giant firework exploded over our heads -- the mall was getting warmed up. Oh baby. At 9:30 the fireworks started and they were huge and loud and right ahead of/above us. It was PER-FECT!! They lasted 20 minutes and car alarms consistenly went off. That's when you know it's good. Some car in the parking lot was blasting patriotic music. So we were surrounded by booming fireworks, car alarms, and a car radio playing American tunes. It was great. I personally feel that no 4th of July is complete without one hearing the song Proud to be an American (which as the finale was going off was playing on that car radio.) It was spontaneous just like our trip to Ventura and the whole day turned out just right. Many thanks go out to Michelle and to her parents for flying her out.

Now we need to go work on our 1000 piece puzzle. You may not hear from us for a while. =)

Our Thrift Day

Moses? Christmas pageant costume?

Are there any Sesame Street characters that are orange? Michelle pimped the collar, Oh SNAP!

Like the wilting flower in the middle? Reeeeeeeeeeeeally makes a statement.

Couple things: #1) Tapered at the knee. #2) Broad at the shoulders (showders if you are Michelle). Remind anyone of ... ANY (and by any I mean ALL) of the Ashley's? (As Michelle says, "You can only fit 2 in the backseat of a 3 seater backseat, not because of hips but because there is not enough showder room.").

It's slightly precious don't you think?

I think this hat is loud enough that it speaks for itself.

Me and Michelle

We had fun today and you can totally tell we are related. This morning I came downstairs and Michelle came out of her room and we were both in knee length bermuda shorts, flip flops, and tshirts with outlines of flowers on them.

We left at 10:30 to go get In n Out on our way to Ventura to visit the thrift shops. It ended up being packed with a street fair, a couple of live bands, tons of food options.. it was crazy crowded and super fun.

We made some good purchases in the shops, and wanted to leave you with our favorite photo from the day.

2 Small Things

Just the other night there were 2 things I learned.

1. I've been singing America, the Beautiful wrong my entire life. Apparently so have all the other people I checked with. I have a violin student who asked if I could get her a copy of that song, so I copied it out of the hymnal. It's too advanced for her as far as reading goes (with the soprano, alto, tenor and bass lines)so I told her I would write it out with only the melody for her. So Friday night I copied it down and went to fill in the words and discovered: -- well before I get to it... how do you sing those first few lines? -- O beautiful for spacious skies ...

2. My mom read the most hilarious verse out of Nehemiah. Now in the time I know it wasn't funny, but to read it today and to imagine it today made me laugh. Here is the verse:
Nehemiah 13:25 (To read it in context click here.)
I rebuked them and called curses down on them. I beat some of the men and pulled out their hair. I made them take an oath in God's name and said: "You are not to give your daughters in marriage to their sons, nor are you to take their daughters in marriage for your sons or for yourselves.

1. Continued.. O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain. Do you sing it: For purple mountains majesty above the fruited plain? It is actually: For purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain.

There. Glad I could help advance your brains.

The Law

This guest blog has been provided by Anna Thomson. The quote is from "Idols of the Heart" by Elyse Fitzpatrick pg 52 pp2. The thoughts are from the Word of God, mainly Psalm 119.

My delight is in the Lord and His law is my pleasure. Re-wording taking place now....My delight ought to be in the Lord and His law ought to be my pleasure. I long so deeply for that. My life has not been a suitable reflection. I read this in a book, a very good book.

The law teaches me how thankful I am to be for Christ's perfect keeping of it. I am bound to Christ because he kept it perfectly, then bore the punishment for my law breaking in His body. By this my heart is prompted to overflow with love and obedience.

The law of the Lord is good. It is our portion and provides wisdom and understanding. It is food to our souls and direction to our feet. It sharpens us, cleanses us, binds us, frees us, and sanctifies us.

I love the law of the Lord. Re-wording taking place now....I ought to love the law of the Lord. And if I love Him, I will keep His commandments. IF I love Him I WILL keep His commandments.

Reflection on the Cross

Last year, I was in a completely different state emotionally then I am now. Last year at this time, my divorce was just filed for. I had just moved back home permanently, I had just been getting re-involved at Placerita Baptist Church. I had just started attending the ladies Bible study, I had just started being discipled by Marie. There were a lot of changes. Lots to work through. It was nothing. Nothing compared to what Christ endured in His time on Earth and the cross that He died on.

I've been thinking back to last year and remembering how poignant Easter was to me. At Easter time words like "sorrow" and "suffering;" "hurt" and "pain" are mentioned often. Words that were near to my heart and soul. In Bible study (the book of John) last spring, right at Easter time we got to the passage on the final supper, the garden, the trial, the crucifixion, and the resurrection. It was seriously, perfect.

I reflected a lot on the Savior, Jesus Christ and His suffering. I reflected on the separation He endured from His Father when He was on the cross. I reflected on the torture His body went through. And for the first time that I really recall. I cried. It hurt so deeply inside to know that He did all that for me. For this sin loving, world that really doesn't care what that meant. I reflected on what it meant to me, to lose my best friend and my love, and realized multiply that by like, a billion and I'm still not even close to what Christ went through. For the first time in my life, the cross was really really real.

Now this year, I look back and I think on all that was attached to what I learned and reflected on last year and I am thankful. This year I give thanks. I reflect still on the wonder of the cross, and the wonderfulness of the cross, and the fullness of the cross. And I still cry. I think I always will now. I hope I always will. And I am thankful for what Christ endured. I am thankful that He took it all on His heart and His brain and His body. I encourage you all to think about these things often. It will put you quickly in a place of humility.

Whatever is happening in your life, just view yourself in light of the cross. Your hurt and suffering is nothing compared to what Christ's was. You are a sinner who can or is saved by Jesus Christ because He loved you and therefore, you have HOPE to look to for the rest of your life. And when you realized how much Christ endured and sacrificed, look to that to be your example in how much you love others in this life. That is truth.

The Cross

And in light of the cross, some brief song lyrics that I think about. They call it how it is:

Man of Sorrows what a name for the Son of God who came. Ruined sinners to reclaim. Hallelujah! What a Savior.
I love this. It's our Savior spoken of in Isaiah 53. Seriously, read it, it's only 12 verses. It will take you like 3 minutes.

Isaiah 53 - Amplified
Isaiah 53
1WHO HAS believed (trusted in, relied upon, and clung to) our message [of that which was revealed to us]? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been disclosed?
2For [the Servant of God] grew up before Him like a tender plant, and like a root out of dry ground; He has no form or comeliness [royal, kingly pomp], that we should look at Him, and no beauty that we should desire Him.

3He was despised and rejected and forsaken by men, a Man of sorrows and pains, and acquainted with grief and sickness; and like One from Whom men hide their faces He was despised, and we did not appreciate His worth or have any esteem for Him.

4Surely He has borne our griefs (sicknesses, weaknesses, and distresses) and carried our sorrows and pains [of punishment], yet we [ignorantly] considered Him stricken, smitten, and afflicted by God [as if with leprosy].

5But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our guilt and iniquities; the chastisement [needful to obtain] peace and well-being for us was upon Him, and with the stripes [that wounded] Him we are healed and made whole.

6All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has made to light upon Him the guilt and iniquity of us all.

7He was oppressed, [yet when] He was afflicted, He was submissive and opened not His mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He opened not His mouth.

8By oppression and judgment He was taken away; and as for His generation, who among them considered that He was cut off out of the land of the living [stricken to His death] for the transgression of my [Isaiah's] people, to whom the stroke was due?

9And they assigned Him a grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in His death, although He had done no violence, neither was any deceit in His mouth.

10Yet it was the will of the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief and made Him sick. When You and He make His life an offering for sin [and He has risen from the dead, in time to come], He shall see His [spiritual] offspring, He shall prolong His days, and the will and pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.

11He shall see [the fruit] of the travail of His soul and be satisfied; by His knowledge of Himself [which He possesses and imparts to others] shall My [uncompromisingly] righteous One, My Servant, justify many and make many righteous (upright and in right standing with God), for He shall bear their iniquities and their guilt [with the consequences, says the Lord].

12Therefore will I divide Him a portion with the great [kings and rulers], and He shall divide the spoil with the mighty, because He poured out His life unto death, and [He let Himself] be regarded as a criminal and be numbered with the transgressors; yet He bore [and took away] the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors (the rebellious).

Cross of Sorrow, Cross of Love
Upon the cross of sorrow, He suffered; upon the cross of love, He died. What greater sacrifice could He have offered, than His own life for mine? The Man of Sorrows bore my sin. The God of Love redeemed my soul, and all eternity revolves around the cross.

The Savior's Lament
See the Savior in the garden. See Him as He kneels to pray. All His sorrow, all His anguish, all our sins upon Him weigh. Though He cries, "Lord, come and help me. Come and take this bitter cup away." He surrenders, "It is not My will, but is Your will I must obey."
See the Savior on the cross. Hear Him cry, cry in agony. Feel His sorrow and His anguish as He suffers on that tree. There He cries out, "Come and help me. My God, why have You forsaken me? Into Your hands Lord, I commit My Spirit." And then He dies for all humanity.

O, To See the Dawn
Ev'ry bitter thought, every evil deed, crowning His blood stained brow.
This last line just makes me think of how vast Christ's death was in regards to every sin. Even if the world had no murder, rape, genocide, abuse..if this world had no sin that we could physically detect; just one single sinful thought would be enough to require Christ. So even if life is looking personally pretty good, not so much sin is being manifested, there is still an evil heart and mind that conjures up enough sin that Christ had to die for it. For your sinful thoughts. Christ died for those.

Aren't we thankful and hopeful? And sooo glad HE ROSE!! We are allowed to live amazing lives now. Redeemed and eternal.

And This!

This is when Aliens came to visit. What the heck is up with the clouds?

Morgan

This is called "The Stinkybutt Candle." Morgan seems to have a problem lately with stinkybutt. I'll just leave it at that. So we've taken to lighting a candle. She posed so well for this picture don't you think?

D-Land Revisited

These are pictures I just discovered on my camera that I took of the CROWDS the day we went to Disneyland. Seriously, we were only there because it was free. There people coming at us from all directions.. North - South - East - West - Northeast - Northwest - Southeast - Southwest - Southnorth - Eastsouth - Westeast - Westnorth and even in between all those:

See that line back there?

My Reasons Why Dinnylan' Really Is 'The Happiest Place On Earth.'

There aren't pictures for everything so use your imagination. Click the pictures an enlarge them.

1. Parking a 1/2 hour away.
With NO shuttle access. - I'm tired by the time I even get to the park.

2. MEDIUM sized coke. - no kiddie, small, large or extra large?

3. The screaming baby in the enclosed and crowded line. -
always enjoyable - especially when the parents pretend like nothing is going on.

4. Little boy "O GAAAAWD. OOOOOO GAAAAAAWWWD.." meltdown directly behind us in line.

5. Thorny bushes. - many times seen.

6. Not knowing which line goes where or to what ride? -
Q: excuse me what line is this for?
A: Astro Blasters
Q: THIS IS FOR ASTRO BLASTERS?? YOU"RE KIDDING ME!! REALLY?
A:yes

7. Wheelchair persons must transfer. -
Really, it's so easy. Just get out.
We all know you are just in your wheelchair so you can go to the front of the line (see #20)

8. The 17 second roller coaster with the 1/2 hour wait. -
17 seconds. thats a quarter of a minute.

9. Speed limit 14. -
what? I thought they always ended in a 5 or a 0.

10. We are politely encouraged to waste. -
please.

11. Black poodle left the entire day in a minivan. - i'm sure it was the happiest place on Earth for that little dog.
12.Not knowing if someone is male or female.

13. Rock buttcracks. -
Just what I want to look at when I'm waiting in line.

14. Waiting in line for the Materhorn and it shuts down for "30 minutes" due to "minor technical difficulties." -
I.e. Parade!

I.E. - with an opening by STOMP:

15. People standing ridiculousy close to you in line. -
A little breathing space please. And why are you touching me? Step back. Step back, otherwise I might have an O God meltdown.

16. The line starts on the OTHER side of the mountain. -
sure let me just walk right over there -- 45 minutes later..
AND..
Indiana Jones' line was so long we were diverted through the Jungle Cruise Treehouse:

17. Drink comes with the 8 dollar soda you purchase!! -
O Sweet Georgia Brown not only do i get the cup, i get the soda to go in it.

18. Fat people in the back! -
How can there be fat people when there are only medium size cokes and the line is on the other side of the mountain?..

19. Politely cutting in front of 100's of people. -
fast passes.

20. WHEELCHAIR LINE! -
This was hilarious to me..just look at the picture.

21. You pay 4 dollars for ice cream and they leave a huge hole in the middle of it.

22. So crowded there is even traffic on the Autopia:
